Enrichment
Often animals in capitivity do not have the
opportunity to carryout a full range of natural
behaviours. Enrichment is the process of
changing our pets environment to anable it to
carryout some of these natural behaviours.
Enrichment is used extensively in zoos but
many people do not think to apply similar
techniques to the environment of their pets.
Increasing the number of natural behaviour
patterns your pet can exhibit will increase its
welfare. The Animal Welfare Act 2006 has
made it a legal requirement for animals to be
given the opportunity to express natural
behaviours and enrichment of your pets
environment is a way this can be achieved.
Even simple things such as giving a pet rabbit
a pit of sand to dig in or providing toilet roll
tubes for a pet gerbil to hide in can increase
it's welbeing. Another useful example is to
scatter your pets daily ration of feed among its
bedding so it has to forage (as it would in the
wild) rather than eating from a bowl. Be
careful to remove uneaten food daily and keep
all food away from soiling.
There are many items on the market that can
help you to enrich the lives of your pet.
Perfect-a-pet has for sale a selection of such
items. These are available from my stand at
various events throughout the year, including
microchipping events. Check the events
section for details.
